JOUVERT
Jouvert is by far one of the most popular events of the entire Carnival celebration.
Thousands of people throng Veterans Drive, whether as participants or onlookers.
This event is difficult to describe. One has to actually be there to experience
its true “Vibes.” It is like a huge street party. The streets are lined with people
from around 4:00 a.m. Some have been partying all night, while others rush into
town early in anticipation of a timely beginning, not wishing to miss the first
band to “strike up” the music. Vendors also line the streets selling such favorites
as Johnny cakes, pates, chicken legs and a variety of beverages to keep high the
energy level of the revelers.
Each band that participates in J’ouvert has its followers. This is soon evident
as they slowly make their way on Veterans’ Drive toward the Carnival Village, jamming
their Roadmarch tunes and latest Carnival hits. The trucks transporting the bands
are surrounded by loyal fans jumping, bouncing, gyrating, and chipping to the vibrating
sounds. Some participants adorn themselves in hilarious outfits, to the amusement
of the spectators and they are oblivious to any comments regarding their attire,
as they are enjoying themselves.
As the heat of the morning sun greets the revelers, the party does not slow down,
and if it rains, it just cools things down a bit. That just serves as confirmation
that rain or sun does not slow down J’ouvert.
No visitor to St. Thomas Carnival should deny themselves of the opportunity to take
part in this exciting event. You have not experienced the heartbeat of Carnival
if you have not seen or participated in J’ouvert. It is indeed a spectacle of sight
and sound.
